Reading – B (A Plea for India)



1. What do fights put us in? 

Fights put us in a difficult situation. They fill hatred against one another, poison our minds, and cause the feeling of segregation. Due to fights, we lack peace and happiness.

 

2. Why does the poet use the expressions ‘proud to be a strong nation’ and ‘hang heads in shame’ at the same time? 

India is a united country with its varied castes, religions, creeds, and communities. We follow ‘unity in diversity’ that makes our nation a ‘strong nation.’ Despite its unity, there are walls of discrimination that lead to disputes and cause violence. The local and internal disputes that shake the walls of unity ‘hang our heads in shame.’ So the two expressions are used at the same time.

 

3. What are the tasks to be finished according to the poet? 

According to the poet, there are many tasks to be finished. India must develop economically to adjoin the developing countries. For this, it must grow technologically, industrially, and socially. We have plenty of resources but lacking self-confidence. The teamwork and unity will fill this gap and lead towards a successful path.

4. What do you understand by the expression 'Unity in diversity'? 

India is a country of various cultures, traditions, and languages. Still, it has one heart. Our cultural heritage serves as a bond of unity between the people of different faiths and creeds. People have sought to develop to achieve a desirable goal of unity amidst diversity.

 

5. Who can see the vision of the whole in India? 

People who have the superior interpretation, synthesis of the power of the mind can see the vision of the whole in India.

 

6. Why are the observers likely to be confused? 

The superficial observers are likely to be confused by the astonishing variety of Indian life. They fail to discover the one in many, the individual in the aggregate, the simple in the composite.

 

7. What did we inherit from our ancestors? 

India has a rich cultural heritage. We inherited several grand treasures in the fields of music, fine arts, dance, drama, theatre, and sculpture from our ancestors.

 

8. Who are turning to the Indian way of life? 

The people of the United States and Europe are turning to the Indian way of life. They are more interested to practice Indian way of living. Indian yogis and maharishis, musicians and spiritual leaders have all attracted them in a big way.

 

9. How has Indian culture influenced the West? 

Charity and love, universal brotherhood and fear of God, piety and unselfishness, control of passions and peace of mind influenced the West a lot.
