DO YOU KNOW HOW TO STUDY AND SCORE 10/10 GRADE POINTS IN ENGLISH?

availability while studying. Consult the dictionary for spellings, meanings etc.Learning can be made enjoyable and effective with the help of dictionary.

DISCOURSES (CREATIVE WRITING/EXPRESSIONS): HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR WRITING SKILLS?

You can improve your writing ability by reading books in English, and listening to the English news telecasts. The next step is practise writing short sentences on any topic you like. Then go on to short paragraphs. Never feel shy to erase incorrect spelling, improper expressions etc. while PRACTISING

DRAFTING. This kind of practice will help you to improve your ability of writing

ELEMENTS OF WRITING: Here is the list of elements of writing: Organisation of ideas, choice of words, grammatical accuracy, conventions of writing (i.e. spelling and punctuation) and well-formed sentences. If you include these elements of writing and

characteristics of discourses, you can score maximum marks in discourses.

+ ORGANISATION OF IDEAS: Organisation of ideas is arranging ideas in proper order.

To improve your organisation of ideas, read books of eminent writers and practise

answering the questions on scrambled (jumbled) sentences.

CHOICE OF WORDS (VOCABULARY): Your choice of words plays an important role in presenting discourses. You have to use apt (exact) words of the context. Read English newspapers and books and also spend your time in the company of English-speaking people. Learn 5-10 words with their meanings and usage daily.

◆ GRAMMATICAL ACCURACY: You can master grammar by observing illustrations and practice. Practice makes grammar perfect. You are advised to practise the pool of exercises on grammar topics like voice, speech, degrees of comparison etc.

SPELLING: Spelling confuses a number of students. A wrongly-spelt word in a sentence varies the meaning or sometimes makes the sentence meaningless. So, writing spellings correctly is a big need for students. For improving your spelling, practise writing words regularly.

STEPS FOR SPELLING PRACTICE:

1. Firstly, learn the pronunciation of words

2. Secondly, divide the words into syllables (eg. construction-con/ struc/ tion, detective- de/tec/tive)

3. In some words, take great care of double letters (i.e. committee, embarrass). vowel clusters (ie. receive, believe), silent letters (e.g. 'k' in knowledge, 'b' in doubt), small hidden words in big words (ie. 'ant' in servant, die' in diesel)

4. Take dictation tests and evaluate your performance. These steps will help you to improve your spelling for sure. → PUNCTUATION: Punctuation is a significant part of sentences. Misuse or omission of punctuation damages the beauty of the sentence. For example, observe the two sentences given below:

1. Let's eat, grandma.

2. Let's eat grandma.

The above two sentences convey a different meaning. Sentence -1 with the comma says that the speaker wants to eat something along with his grandma whereas sentence -2 without comma says that the speaker wants to eat his grandma. Sentence-2 does not look natural because of omission of the comma. Now you must have realised the importance of punctuation.

→ SENTENCE FORMATION: Most students do not have proper exposure about structures of sentences. This makes the students struggle with sentence making. One of the natural ways to improve sentence formation is to study and apply the structures of 12 tenses in active voice and 8 tenses in passive, and also four kinds of sentences.

EDITING (CORRECTIONS): The question on editing in paper -1 can be done easily and confidently by focusing specially on verbs, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, pronouns, spellings of confusing words etc. Underline the above said words in the English textbook and read the lessons giving importance to the underlined words. Do not forget to read the lessons again and again.

+ COMPREHENSION PASSAGES: Read the given passage three times with utmost care. First reading for a general idea about the passage, second reading for understanding the terminology used in the context and third reading for getting a clear, correct and complete idea about the passage. Then read the questions.

◆ MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS (MCQs): You can choose the correct options by

eliminating the wrong options.

e.g. Nick Vujicic was born in.............

A) X America B) Australia

C) X Germany D) X England

The correct option is 'B'. Likewise, you can eliminate the wrong options and choose the correct option. Follow this technique as it helps you to read each question carefully and choose the correct options confidently.

SHORT QUESTIONS: The answers to the short questions will be given in the passage. Identify the answer parts and make necessary changes if required. Use the pronouns appropriately. In some cases, general questions will be asked on the theme of the passage. These answers may not be included in the passage. Anyway, you have to write answers by using your existing knowledge.

→ DOUBTS: If you have doubts regarding any topic, approach your English teacher and clarify them at the earliest.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

→ HANDWRITING: Present the answers from the first page to the last page with beautiful and legible handwriting. Handwriting is the reflection of your presentation. Use medium- sized and round letters. Maintain uniform spacing between every two letters, words and lines.

→ THINK AND WRITE: Think twice before you put your ideas on the paper. You can easily

erase a wrongly-spelt on the computer but not on the paper. This will help you to avoid erasing.

ROUGH WORK: Make use of the last page of the answer booklet for rough work, if

necessary, while answering only major and minor discourses. ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: You can attempt the additional questions only if you have time after writing and reviewing all answers. Otherwise you need not attempt additional

questions..

CHECK: Review your answers and also check to see whether you have attempted the must-attempt questions before you hand back the answer script to the invigilator.
