UNIT 1 Reading A : Attitude is Altitude

 After reading the lesson write the answers for the following questions in 3 to 4 sentences each



1. How did his parents react when he was born? 

   When Nick was born, his father was so much shocked that he left the hospital room to vomit. His mother was very much worried. She didn’t take him into her lap until he was four months old.

 

2. Do you support the decision of Nick’s parents to join him in a mainstream school? Why or why not? 

   Yes, I support the decision of Nick’s parents to join him in a mainstream school. Because it gives him independence. There he can learn better by competing with normal students.

 

3. What does ‘cruel trick’ in the passage mean? Whom did Nick’s parents blame for doing it? 

   The phrase ‘cruel trick’ refers to the disability of Nick. Being born without arms and legs is the cruel trick mentioned in the passage. They blame God for making this cruel trick to them.

 

4. If you were in place of Nick, what would have you done if you were asked to go to mainstream school? 

   If I were in place of Nick; I also would have obeyed my parent’s decision. Though there was a risk of bullying, it would give me independence. I would learn better in a mainstream school by competing with the normal students.

 

5. Why did Nick try to drown himself in the bath? 

   Nick was deeply depressed. He felt that there was no purpose and strength for him to live. So, he tried to drown himself in the bath.

 

6. Nick said that there was so much that was impossible for him. What do you think are impossible for Nick? 

   There are so many things which are impossible to Nick. For instance, he can’t drive a car. He can’t hug his children. He can’t do weight lifting.

 

7. How did Nick get inspiration to live? What did he decide to do? 

   Nick was inspired by the newspaper article about another disabled man who had managed to achieve great things and helped others. He decided to use his life to encourage other people and give them the courage that the article had given him.

 

8. Do you support the decision of Nick to kill himself? Why or why not? 

   I don’t support the decision of Nick to kill himself. Depression in life is quite common. We should find some way to get out of it. We should not make our dependents feel sad by committing suicide. It will worsen the situation further.

 

9. Why was Nick awarded ‘Australian Young Citizen of the Year’ award? 

   Nick faced many challenges in his life. He overcame his disability and became an international symbol of triumph over adversity. He was awarded ‘Australian Young Citizen of the Year’ award for his bravery and perseverance.

 

10. What made Nick choose Bethany Hamilton as his surfing coach? 

    Bethany Hamilton is also disabled like Nick. Her arm had been bitten off by a shark. Nick might have thought that a disabled person could learn better from another disabled person. So, he chose Bethany Hamilton as his surfing coach.

 

11. 'No one has ever done that in the history of surfing,' Nick said. What was that which no one has ever done? How could Nick do it? 

    In the history of surfing, no one has done a 360 degree spin on the surfing board. Only Nick can do it. It is possible for him because he has a very low centre of gravity.

 

12. Why do you think Nick began travelling the world? 

    Nick decided to encourage people and give courage and hope to those who are under depression due to disability and various other reasons. He wanted to be an inspiration to others. So he began travelling the world as a motivational speaker.
