UNIT – 6 (BIO DIVERSITY)
Reading – B (Or will the Dreamer Wake)
1. The poet says 'This could be our last true moment' (last
stanza). Is it true? In what way(s)?
Yes, it’s true. This could be our last true moment. If we
still do not take necessary steps for the conservation of these endangered
animals, we may not see them in future. This may cause harm to the ecological
balance. Our environment will degrade further.
2. What does the grandchild in this poem symbolize?
The poet repeatedly used the phrase ‘The grandchild’ in the
poem. It symbolizes the future generation of human beings.
3. Who is the dreamer here? Who is being referred to?
Humans are the dreamers here. They are apathetic. They don’t
bother about the extinction of endangered species.
Reading – C (A Tale of Three Villages)
4. Who was Thomas Agonyo? What did he do all day at his
village?
Thomas Agonyo was a university student in Lagos, Nigeria. He
came home with a new Chemistry book. He spent all day looking at the drums and
writing things down and talking to himself and shaking his head.
5. How did Thomas Agonyo help the villagers?
He told the villagers that the drums contained poisonous
chemicals from Italy that could harm the people of the village.
6. ‘The mountain of death’ in the above passage refers to
what? Why are lots of children sick?
The mountain of death refers to the pyramid of identical
drums with poisonous chemicals. The chemicals mix with the drinking water, so
lots of children became sick because of the poisonous chemicals.
7. What happened to the children?
The children began to vomit. Their hair fell out. They
couldn't eat. They grew so thin, and sores appeared all over their little
bodies. They died after two weeks of the incident because of the adverse
effects of the radioactive dust.
8. What measures should the government have taken when the
nuclear reactor was installed beside the village?
The villagers should have been shifted to another place. The
government should have provided transport facilities to evacuate the area
immediately after the installation. Various security measures should have been
taken to prevent accidents and ensure safety.
9. Do you support setting up ‘Nuclear reactors’ near
villages? Justify your answer.
I don’t support setting up nuclear reactors near villages.
There are risks of biological changes, mutations in animals, and various health
issues that could arise due to exposure to radioactive materials. Additionally,
safety concerns and potential environmental impacts make it risky to have
nuclear reactors in close proximity to residential areas.
