UNIT – 5 (SOCIAL ISSUES)
Reading – C (Abandoned)
1. Why are the shrieks
of the baby unheard?
The baby was rejected and thrown away in the dustbin. The garbage bin was
located on the outskirts of the city. The baby cried a lot for help, but there
was nobody as it was dark midnight. Everyone was asleep.
2. "An outcast of
destiny" What is meant by this expression?
The innocent baby was rejected and thrown away by his family. This also
means that the baby is an ‘outcast’ who is not accepted by the people and has
been forced out of its home.
3. Why do people abandon
babies?
Some people abandon their babies because they don’t want the responsibility
to raise the child. It is also seen that some people don’t want girl babies, so
they abandon them. Another reason could be children born before marriage that
people are ashamed of, so they abandon them.
4. Why was the baby
shivering?
The baby was wrapped in a tattered dirty cloth. It was thrown in a garbage.
As it was a dark, cold night, the baby was shivering and crying bitterly in an
uncontrolled manner and finally died.
5. What leads to a
bloody chaos?
The cat’s jumping into the garbage bin leads to a bloody chaos. It jumps
into the bin for catching rats. The rats leave their food and run away. The cat
kills the baby.
6. Comment on the line
"The only sin of the infant — BEING BORN."
The baby is abandoned and thrown mercilessly in the dustbin. The only sin
of the baby was to come into this world where people were unkind and society
was uncivilized.
Reading – B (The Storeyed House-II)
7. Kondiba Patil and
others accepted the customary betel leaves but did not eat them because Bayaji
was a Mahar by caste, and they didn't want to eat anything in Mahar's house.
They had the feeling that Bayaji was an untouchable.
8. 'This untouchable
worm has got a swollen head. He needs proper handling'. Who said these words?
What was their intention?
Kondiba Patil and other high caste people who came to Bayaji's House said
these words. Their intention in saying these words was to do some harm to
Bayaji. They didn't stomach the fact that Bayaji, an untouchable, constructed a
brand-new house.
9. Do you support the
practice of untouchability? Why or why not?
No, I don’t support the evil practice of untouchability. No one in this
world is untouchable. This is a man-created idea in the minds of some people.
There shouldn't be such kind of practices. Everybody is equal.
10. Who warned Bayaji?
Why?
Kondiba Patil warned Bayaji. There was only one storeyed house in the
village that belonged to Kondiba. Kondiba couldn’t bear the news that Bayaji
was building a rival storeyed house. So, he warned Bayaji to stop the idea of
constructing a storeyed house.
11. Why did Bayaji say to
Kondiba, 'It's with your blessings that I have ventured on this storeyed house'
though he didn't get any blessings from him?
Bayaji sensed that Kondiba and other high caste people could not bear the
fact that an untouchable was constructing a storeyed house. He had a bad
experience with Bhujaba Patil earlier, so in order to satisfy them he said
that.
12. If you were in the
place of Bayaji, how would you react to Kondiba's warning?
If I were in Bayaji's place, I would file a case against all the people who
stopped me constructing a storeyed house. Because nobody has the right to stop
the progress of a person. Constructing a house of his choice is his right.
