 UNIT – 3 (HUMAN RELATIONS)

Reading – B (Another Woman)

  1. Why did the woman bend a little more when her husband came home?

The woman was more afraid of her husband than her mother-in-law. He didn't support her. He was not helpful to her. So she bent her back a little more when her husband came home.

2. What does the poetess mean by the last line of the poem, ‘We shield our faces from the heat’?

The last line of the poem suggests that the people are trying to turn their faces away from the injustices being done to the women. Though the people know that the women are being burnt to death due to domestic violence, they don't come forward to take any action against them.

3. Do you feel that the woman did the right thing in killing herself? What should she have done?

I feel that the woman had not done the right thing in killing herself. She should have registered a complaint against her husband and mother-in-law in a police station. Committing suicide doesn’t bring any change in the attitude of the in-laws.

4. Why was Aunt Jane worried?

Aunt Jane was surprised to see a car, a piano, a refrigerator, a radiogram, and beautiful furniture in the house of Jack and Jill. She knew that they couldn't afford to buy all these things. So she thought that she had given away 2000 pounds instead of 200 pounds. This thought made her worried.

5. What surprised Aunt Jane most? Why?

Aunt Jane was surprised most when Jack told her that the house belonged to them. She was amazed to know that they had owned such a lovely house because she knew that they didn't have enough money to buy the house.

6. Do you support buying things in instalments? Give reasons for your answer.

Yes, I support this method because we can enjoy the pleasures of having anything by paying money in easy instalments. But the instalment amount should not exceed our earnings.

(OR)

I don't support this method as the method may push us into debts if it becomes difficult to pay instalments.

Reading – C (The Never-Never Nest)

7. Why did Aunt Jane refuse to get into the car of Jack and Jill?

Jack and Jill bought the car in instalments. They didn’t pay the money completely. They didn’t own it completely. So Aunt Jane refused to get into the car that didn’t belong to them completely.

8. Why do you think Jill posted the cheque to Dr. Martin before Jack’s return from the bus stop?

Jill quickly posted the cheque to Dr. Martin before Jack’s return. She wanted to own the baby completely. She knew that Jack wouldn’t agree to pay the bill of Dr. Martin.

9. Who do you think first understood Aunt Jane? Substantiate your answer.

I think Jill first understood Aunt Jane. When Aunt Jane was leaving, she gave Jack and Jill a cheque for 10 pounds. She asked them to pay off one bill and own at least one thing completely. Jill understood and sent the cheque to Dr. Martin to own the baby completely..
