1. What did Abel Merryweather decide to include in his new will? 

Abel Merryweather decided to alter his will. He wanted to leave all his bits of things to whoever he would live with when he had died.

 

2. What do you say about the attitude of Amelia and Elizabeth towards Abel Merryweather? 

Amelia and Elizabeth never took care of their father. They neglected him. They started dividing things between them thinking that the old man was dead. They tried to steal his things. They wanted to put him up for the sake of money.

 

3. If you were in place of Abel Merryweather, to whom would you give your property? Why? 

If I were in place of Abel Merryweather, I would also give my property to those who look after me very well. If none took care of me, then I would donate the property to an orphanage.

 

4. What were the three things that Abel Merryweather planned to do on the next Monday? 

On Monday, the father wanted to do three things. He wanted to go to the lawyer and alter his will; he would go to the insurance office and pay his premium and he would go to St Philip’s Church and get married.

 

5. Why did Abel decide to marry? 

Abel was disgusted with the attitude of his daughters towards him. They didn’t take care of him. They felt him as a burden to them. Abel found someone who felt pleasant to look after him. So, he decided to marry again.

 

6. Do you support the decision of Abel to get married again? Give reasons for your answer. 

Yes, I support the decision of Abel to get married again. He was disgusted with the attitude of his daughters. He needed someone to look after him in his old age. So there was nothing wrong in marrying again.

 

Reading – C (The Brave Potter)

 

7. What did the potter remember when the storm began? What did he want to do? 

When the storm began, the potter remembered that he had tied the donkey under a tree outside his hut. He wanted to take the donkey into the stable.

 

8. What made the potter angry? 

The potter’s donkey ran away into the forest. This made him angry. He went into the forest to search for it. He often stumbled over roots and fallen branches. With each step the potter felt angrier and angrier with his donkey.

 

9. Why couldn’t the potter notice the difference between the donkey and the tiger? 

The potter was drunk. It was raining heavily. Moreover, it was dark. So he did not notice the difference between the donkey and a tiger.

 

10. Why did the king gather a large army? 

A war broke out between the potter's country and the neighbor. The neighbor’s country was very strong. So, the king immediately gathered a large army to fight with the enemy.

 

11. Why did the king send the messengers to the potter’s house? 

The king realized that his army was not strong enough to defeat the neighboring country. He needed a hero to lead his army. One of his ministers suggested to the king that the brave potter could lead the army. So the king sent the messengers to the potter’s house.

 

12. 'He has only brought us trouble.' Who had brought them trouble? How? 

The donkey had brought trouble to the potter. Had it not run into the forest, he would have not brought the tiger and tied it to the tree. He would have not been considered brave. He would have not been made the General of the Army.
